What's Going On with the Dollmaker?
in a word: Gardening
right.
and in another word: Landscaping.
which is to say- creating Raised Beds...
so... still Gardening.
Not too many DOLLS getting made this
Oh, except this one...
Possibly temporarily heavily textured with Beaded Dangles...
Nobody knows where the Dollmaker is going with this..
But
A colorful Tide of Flowers did sweep through!
Flowers massing, shifting around and piling up
in the undertow around Doll Workshop Surfaces...
Really! It's like a Florist's Shed in there!...
Corsage-making
may release the Flow of Creativity and Gusto needed right now...
Definitely a Festive-Occasion Gift!
the thing is
Whatever Else is happening... Gardening will prevail!!

So.... the Dollmaker is just going with it.
The first growing season of the year is arguably the finest!
The nights still cool and the days breezy.
A Treasure of Inestimable Value: Hilario!
Who personally saw to it that the Dollmaker's
Bat-House
got hung!
So now we wait for the bats!!
Hopefully, they will arrive before
Halloween!
While, once again,
we find ourselves drawn to the Contemplation of
Cyclical Things...
Ah, Spring Time!
When Storytellers are compelled to happily reiterate
the mythological biography of a Force to be Reckoned With
known in both Esoteric Circles and Common Folk Lore as
Indeed... an enigmatic Legendary Figure...
...from a time so long past as to be indefinite in history or tradition...
A mysterious Character pre-dating Christianity, decidedly Pagan,
and yet repeatedly represented alongside Religious Icons...
Wait.
What do you mean by GreenMan... a little Green Man... ?
Who, indeed, IS this
Legendary Green Man Character...
"He's probably Symbolic, right?"
"He's probably the Humanizing of an Inexplicable Force of Nature, right?"
Well, some say he is like the Fairies- invisible in the Foliage...
but Always Present... always watching...
and others say: That is just a droll tale told by a gnome...
ah, but what about the Sculptures- the Carvings...?
Ok...
So- once upon a time, on Earth...
there lived a strange race of Ancient Earthlings
who had Vines growing from their mouths and noses....
LOL. Just kidding.
They certainly didn't
have vines growing out of their mouths and noses! How absurd!
These Ancients were... ordinary humans... like you and me...
Except that they were GREEN!
LOL. Just kidding.
No, no, they weren't green.
Okay, really now, Once upon a Time,
there lived an ancient race of ordinary people
who were just very very into
the GREENERY....
This group of ancient earthlings observed that,
by mid-winter, all the leaves had fallen from the trees,
yet this did not mean that these trees were dead.
On the contrary, the trees grew more leaves again
in the Springtime.
When the time was right,
the trees came back to life.
(Sound familiar, self-evident, even simplistic?)
Right. But it wasn't just the trees-
the bushes and shrubs grew new leaves again too,
the grass came back from dried-up husks,
and the flowers popped out in renewed splendor-
all of which fairly reliably led to fruiting, harvesting and eating...
and indeed, folks back then made eating a priority!
Generally speaking, to this day we still feel strongly about eating.
So Nature
absolutely awed the simple folk of ancient times-
they really marveled at the behavior of
the Greenery.
They watched throughout the winter
and waited for the Greenery to come back each year
and they saw it as miraculous
and darn near religious when the Green DID come back.
And each year in the Springtime...
they called it-
The Return of the Green.
( I believe I mentioned they were simple folk.)
The color GREEN
symbolized new growth...a new beginning...a fresh start...new life...
and above all...
food. And the Return of the Green was a
darned good reason to party.
So, the simple Green-loving people of olden days
would hold these wondrous festivals
to celebrate the Springtime and the Return of the Greenery,
they danced and frolicked about and found ingenious ways
to entice the Greenery to flourish.
Yes, friends, they did think that they could entice the Greenery to flourish,
and some of you know that this is definitely
Another story...
...for now let us just say that since
the GREENERY
was the Theme of the Festivities,
someone had to REPRESENT the GREENERY in the PARADE!
It follows of course, that back in those days, the men were the actors;
so of course it was a man
who got to wear the costume made of leaves and branches
and play the part of the GREENERY in the parade,
waving to the rabble-rousing crowd
while perched on a festively adorned donkey
who also wore a matching costume of green and leafy branches.
The guy impersonating the Greenery became known as
the GREEN MAN.
(LOL! Yes, this Tradition lives on, even today!)
The end.
That's the end of the Story...Greenman was simply a Greenery Impersonator !
uh- except that the Story
actually keeps moving along from there!
During these Springtime Frolic Fests,
there was much Gratitude expressed
for
the GREENERYbut also
for the wine!Hail to the Wine!
Yes! The Greenery led to the Wine which led to
the Blissful Intoxication and the Explanation of Life!
Academic men Besotted, Elevated, and Motivated to Teach Others
sagely expressed Expanded Views on
this topic of Cyclical Renewal!
It struck the ones still standing
that there was an Esoteric Meaning to be discerned here!
And
a scholarly task it wasto unravel the Esoteric Meaning these wise elders discerned...
U
nanimously they determined thus:The man on the back of the donkey
pretending to be a GREEN MAN
Really was a GREEN MAN!
hmmmm....
In other words...
The Individual Representing the SACRED GREENERY in actuality
has the same Regenerative Abilities within himself
as the Plants he is Representing!
"Green" symbolically meaning: Self-Renewing.
Capable of new growth.
For most people, a typical example of Self-Restoration happens
during our "dormant" phase- during sleep each night.
We wake up refreshed and renewed!
.....................
Artists who may also have been drinking the wine
and attempting to Interpret these Visionary Ideas
succeeded in depicting bizarre mergers between Plants and Humans
in painting and sculpture.
Bless their hearts.
They got to work carving the Green Man Image
later dubbed "The Foliate Head"
into stone columns and massive wooden doors across the countryside.
Their graphic renderings of faces surrounded by leaves,
with
somewhat gruesome vinestwirling into or around the mouth,
have become
"the signature look" of the Greenman.
What were people of the Future supposed to think of THAT!
Students researching these images might wonder
what sort of half-plant half-human creatures
these ancient artists were striving to represent -
...but scholars such as Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell
have found the GREENMAN images fascinating
and have written volumes describing Greenman as
an ARCHETYPE
...which means basically: A Universal Truth.
Yes, The Return of the Green - Spring Time
does qualify as a Basic Truth!
O
k so the Story ends there! Right?
Well- now picture- into these Esoteric realms... enters...
the Dollmaker.
She who is always on the lookout
for unique, powerful and meaningful
Imagery for her Dollmaking...
hmmmmmm, what's this?
Green, Self-Regenerative, Leafy and Symbolic...
oh yeah, got to make That Guy!
So, the unexpectedly profound Answer to the question,
"Who is the Green Man?"
LEAVEs us... (hee hee)...
gazing upon our own reflections in the mirror...
and yet...
There are times- when the so-called Veil
is thin...
Times when
the True Greenman of the Forest does appear..look carefully...
follow his outline through the Shadows
his silhouette traced in deep leaves
the Greenman...
not the doll, not the archetype, not the parade-walker,
but the Leafy One, secretive, elemental,
a trick of flickering movement, stems, leaves and light
shifting forward and backwards in a slight breeze...
...watch for him.
