What is it about?

The Make/Do Festival

is a two-day celebration

of art, expression, creativity and community.

Think of it as

 an old-fashioned community picnic

meets

backyard carnival

meets

 maker faire

 meets

 your school talent show

 meets

an idea you once had in the back of your head.

One idea is

a Kid's Art Train - Made of Boxes

 (an old backyard favorite)

Kids will be invited to "jet off to the Moon"

(and Beyond!)

riding (sitting) in

The Boxes they have Painted!

Moms and Dads can Commemorate the Day with

Adorable PHOTOS of the Passengers!

What WORDS would YOU want to write?

What Pictures would you want to draw

on the sides of Zany Train Box Cars?

and how would you do it?

You might count the letters and

start with the middle letter in the central position...

moving outwards to the beginning and the end of the word

and then perhaps

making the letters thin at first, and then thickening them...

and adding colors... and possibly... cloud shapes...

The amazing "Born Again Emporium" Thrift Store of Smithville

donated ten LARGE sturdy "Train Cars" to the Cause!

These Boxes are actually big enough for some adults!

and so  the "Transformation to Train Cars" has begun..

The Dollmaker began to research the huge

(and controversial) body of work called

 also known as:

It turns out that communication using walls instead of canvas

 is a World-Wide phenomena!

And quite ancient...

Drawing Symbols and Signatures

 on walls is-

like- cave-man old..

some of the earliest Human Art...

...their hands were their stencils.

Today it's a little different...

There is definitely an "Underground" Aspect to Graffiti Art...

and, as the Dollmaker found out,

 it has it's own Terminology-

a TAG is an Identity, Signature or Initials

A Throw Up is a simple style like bubble letters

 which prioritizes speed and visibility..

A Piece is a complicated and intricate large-scale mural

and

Wildstyle involves interlocking letters and decorative elements

like arrows and spikes

- having liberated themselves

from relying exclusively on the spray can...

 Graffiti Artists nowadays use

all varieties of Paint

air brush, oil-based chalks,

and even plaster

Further research on the topic of

yielded the interesting fact that

Certain Street Artists have actually become famous- even in anonymity!

for example...

For years the Dollmaker actually has owned a bumper sticker which states:

But she did not (until now) connect this jolly little thought

with the famous - yes- world famous- Street Artist

known as "Banksy"

The phrase

"art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable"

is a quote attributed to Mexican poet and academic, Cesar A. Cruz,

with which the (anonymous) British Street Artist,

Banksy

agrees wholeheartedly...

(in fact, the quote is often accredited to him!)

Banksy's Imagery is definitely "Provocative"

"The Flower Thrower" is one of Banksy's most iconic stencils:

The defiance shown by the figure reflects

a Universal Call for Peaceful Resistance-

a major theme in Banksy's work.

Essentially, what he is saying is

Street Art should provoke Thought and Reflection.

Banksy's Art is known for it's dark humor, anti-Human-Rights-Abuses,

anti-war, and anti-consumerism messages.

His work is found in significant places around the World. (like war zones)

At this point in his career,

far from being considered vandalism,

his artwork is actually often appreciated and protected by the owners of the buildings-

(Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie own original Banksys)

and get this:

The highest price paid for a Banksy Stencil was

for the infamous "Love is in the Bin" .

This was the framed artwork that shredded itself

seconds after it was sold  in 2018

at Sotheby's for $1.4 million

ha. after that

it was resold again in 2021 for  $25.3 million.

Check out this video which shows the actual moment of shredding:

The Dollmaker's take in this Age of Information is that

Street Art can be a positive force

by beautifying cities, promoting social change,

and encouraging community engagement...

It can also redefine the Rules of the Art World..

As the picture moved through the hidden shredding mechanism...

Was this seen as an Act of Destruction- nope-

It was viewed as a Moment of Creation! LOL
